Geographic community: The High Desert region, with a specific focus on Adelanto and Victorville
Approach: The High Desert Intersections Collaborative is focused on building and strengthening opportunities for upstream community health in the areas of K-12 education, regional economic development and healthy, affordable housing. As a multi-sector partnership, the collaborative is working to identify and pursue organizational practices in the Local Control and Accountability Plans (LCAPs) to promote health equity and advocate for the expansion of early childhood education programs in under-resourced communities in the area. Partners are also focused on building local wealth through the advancement of economic development opportunities: exploring ordinances that incentivize and promote entrepreneurship, and expanding access to financial institutions and policies that encourage businesses to hire people who have previously been incarcerated or have a history of substance abuse. Recognizing the interrelated nature of social determinants of health, High Desert partners are working with local initiatives to connect youth to career pathway programs, promote existing job and career training opportunities in historically excluded areas of the region and improve access to affordable and safe housing in the high desert’s poorest census tracts.
Backbone organization/hospital ministry: Providence – St. Joseph Health, St. Mary Medical Center and Global Institute for Public Strategies
